Mail & Guardian Review

Author: Mail & Guardian Review, 27 June 2009

Cutout Collective's star has risen quickly since they appeared on the Johannesburg scene in 2008. Formed by multi-instrumentalists Jason Hartford and Time Apter, their live band now features Max Lehr on drums and visual artist Flikkerr. Their sound has been done before, a mixture of stomping beats and punchy synths, with some angsty vocals over the top - think Depeche Mode or The Faint. But they pull it off with aplomb. The beats are hard and if by the end of this 6-track EP, you're not ready to invade Poland, there's something wrong with you. The best song is easily the morbid closing track, Grimm Days, which sees the band branching out and giving a nod to Trent Reznor's early Nine Inch Nails material. As one of the new idependent label Deconstruction Recording's first signings, this band is definitely on the cusp of establishing themselves on the South African music scene and i wouldn't be surprised if better things are on the horizon. But this EP will do nicely for now. - Lloyd Gedye
