Ballet

Copelia still wonderful on small stage

Author: Fiona Brown, 15 June 2009

I was amazed on Saturday evening to see how beautifully the SABT dancers have coped with the limited space afforded them at the Pro Musica Theatre. The production is beautifully staged, the dancing is world class. Molfesis was superb as Swanhilda, with impeccable technique, and balance to make a grown Ballet teacher cry! Several up and coming youngsters are showing their potential, especially Yolande Olckers, who is finally having the opportunity to dance at a mature level. We look forward to seeing a great deal more of her. Graduate Jessica Overton is also one to watch, and Elizabeth Nienaber, dissapointed at having one partner injured, is going to be a real crowd pleaser. Kevin Hurter was a real surprise in the character of Dr Copelius: who ever would have guessed at the comic talents behind that manly exterior? A wonderful show!
